Work in progress
A journey through the world and through time.
The design is inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, the walnut harks back to mid-20th century modernism, and the dimensions are tailored to the European housing market. That is Aiku, the latest home range from &dez.
Aiku means enduring love, passion – even immortality in the language of the Yorùbá (a West-African ethnic group). The name alludes to the development of the range. Aiku is a work in progress, and the range will be regularly supplemented by new pieces. This is just the start.
The grid pattern on the cabinets refers to the traditional Shoji sliding doors and screens. This stylistic element immediately caused the biggest challenge: how do you prevent hinged doors and drawers from interrupting the line pattern? By recessing the doors and drawers into the carcass between the slats. The cabinet panels and the slats align along the same intersecting lines.
The accompanying tables offer an organic contrast. Their dimensions are tailored to the trend towards smaller living, and eating at home with friends and family. The drop-shaped dining table is 240 cm long, and just 110 cm wide at its broadest point. The three legs offer maximum freedom to sit wherever you like. The same is true of the round tables: one person more or less can always be slotted in. Simply move over a little and it will work.
Together, the tables and cabinets form a balanced whole. The choice of walnut is motivated by the wood’s timeless, warm character. It chimes perfectly with the spirit of the present time. Home is a feeling: comfort, safety, security. Chilly and hard is out, cosy and soft is in.
