UPCYCLED ART

Glass paintings are injected with light in the form of LED spectacles perched on the noses of assorted wildlife.

The 3D wall decoration takes on an ecological, tactile dimension: collages of post-consumer materials in a frame fashioned from the same. Mirrors acquire a DIY sustainability factor: you can always add a personal colour to the natural wooden frame.

For centuries, wall decoration has hung on walls, or stood on wall-mounted cabinets or shelves. In the 21st century, wall decoration can also stand on the ground, either casually or in a staged manner. Fundamental changes and innovations can primarily be found in the wall object itself: the artistic expressions, the sculptures, materials, colours, and dimensions.

Organic shapes, natural elements and ideally non-virgin materials dominate the furniture world. Ter Halle is aligning itself with this.

For example, with 3D artworks in an experimental eco-style: mixed techniques with recycled materials such as fabrics, yarns, paper, and foam. A remnant of tulle nestled in a dancing interplay of wool threads. A collage of fabric fragments that allude to the original piece of clothing, the front and the sleeve. Touching is allowed! Naturally, the frame is made of recycled plastic. The upcycling has been pushed to the limit.
Another example of natural inspiration: the ‘Egg’ mirror. Although its sculptural shape is more capricious, more extravagant, than egg-shaped. The solid wood frame can be finished in black, dark brown, sand — or be uncoloured, purely natural. This final option is intended for the home artist; you can give the frame your own colour. If you grow tired of it, you can simply paint over it. And the mirror is good to go again. Customising becomes personalising with your own hand — and thus endlessly extending the lifespan.

Something entirely different is the latest trend in glass paintings. How can you describe these: anthropomorphic surrealism, neo-pop art, glamour art, psychedelic trippy art? In any case, a statement piece: a wild animal in an eccentric outfit, in a sophisticated, decadent setting. That pearl necklace, that thick cigar, the horns as a hunting trophy on the hat, hilarious! The fluorescent LED glasses create a neon vibe. You can dim the light with a switch on the power cable.

Voilà – an overview of the directions the collection is taking. In Brussels there will be more to see, more coming your way.
