Creating atmosphere on dark days at Marckdael

Marckdael has played with light for over forty years.

The family-run business from Hoogstraten in Belgium offers an extensive range, from stylised pendant and standing lamps to eye-catching table and floor lamps. For production, the Van Dijck family – who created the Marckdael brand – works with European ateliers in Italy and Portugal, where people still regard lighting as a craft and the métier remains deeply rooted in the culture. As the family manages everything in-house, Marckdael can offer both permanent collections and bespoke pieces.

An absolute trend? The rise of the lampshade. Lampshades have traditionally offered a softer way of creating atmosphere in a room, but in recent years we’ve seen all kinds of unusual combinations of bases and shades emerge. This winter, Marckdael is embracing colour, print and texture. Warm shades such as Chocolate, Oker Yellow and Burgundy are proving popular. Bronzo also looks set to be a hit, as does Sabbia, a sandy beige that allows the light fitting to blend seamlessly into a neutral interior.
